Marc B. Terrill

President and CEO

Marc has served as the professional leader of the Associated system since 2003 and is one of only six individuals who have held this position over the Associated’s 100-year history. In this important leadership capacity, Marc has provided vision and practical strategies to enhance community building, resource development and deployment and the fostering of alliances with a wide array of strategic partners. He holds an undergraduate degree from the University of Florida and a Masters of Social Work with a concentration in community organization from the Wurzweiler School of Social Work at Yeshiva University. Marc has also received continuing education certificates from the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, the Center for Creative Leadership in Greensboro, North Carolina and Harvard University in areas of management, leadership theory and application and strategy development. In 2005, Marc received an Honorary Doctorate from the Baltimore Hebrew University (now the Baltimore Hebrew Institute at Towson University). He has served on several Boards including the Baltimore Community Foundation, LifeBridge Health Systems and JPro Network which is a continental professional network for those who lead Jewish Communal organizations. Marc has received numerous awards and accolades including the presentation of the Mandelkorn Distinguished Service Award for Outstanding Professional National Leadership (2014) from the JPro Network. He is married to Diana, a Clinical Psychologist in private practice in Towson, Maryland. They have three children Maddie, Samantha and Eli. Hear from Marc

Michelle Gordon

Chief of Staff

Michelle currently serves as the Chief of Staff of The Associated after more than nine years with the organization. In this role, Michelle manages the Executive Office and governance issues including by-laws compliance, the Board of Directors and the Board of Governors. In addition, she coordinates The Associated’s Corporate Giving program and various other community relations projects.

Leslie K. Pomerantz

Chief Development Officer

Leslie has worked full-time in the Baltimore Jewish community since 1991. Beginning her career at the JCC, she served in a variety of capacities, most notably as the Director of the 2002 JCC Maccabi Games. In 2003, she joined the staff of Jewish Volunteer Connection as the Executive Director and grew the program from a small volunteer clearinghouse organization to one offering a myriad of programs for volunteers of all ages. She was the catalyst behind the development of several leadership initiatives, including three highly competitive and prestigious teen leadership programs. In 2009, she was named Executive Director of the Center for Community Engagement and Leadership (CCEL), The Associated’s Human Resource Development arm. Most recently, she served as a Senior Vice President of Development at The Associated, overseeing an Integrated Resource Development Strategy, Associated Women and the Annual Campaign. She recently completed a selective and prestigious national program for 20 top fundraisers through Jewish Federations of North America, The Fundraising University. She holds an MSW and an MA in Jewish Studies. She lives in Reisterstown with her husband Stephen, a radiologist, and their three children.

Mark Smolarz

Chief Operating and Financial Officer

Mark is responsible for most of the infrastructure for The Associated which even extends to many of its constituent agencies including finance, human resources, facilities, technology, investments, risk management and community allocations. Mark started with The Associated in early 2004 as the Chief Financial Officer and has picked up these additional administrative responsibilities over time.

Allison Baumwald

Senior Vice President, Annual Campaign

As Senior Vice President, Annual Campaign, Allison Baumwald oversees The Associated’s Annual Campaign efforts, including affinities, community campaign, top gifts and Associated Women. Allison, who began her career with The Associated in 2003 as Campaign Associate, most recently served as Vice President of Associated Women for the past five years. A graduate of the University of Michigan and Brandeis University, where she earned a BA and MA, Baumwald also served as Director of Development and Vice President, Resource Development.

Michael I. Friedman, J.D., CAP

Senior Vice President, Philanthropic Planning and Services

Michael has been with The Associated since 1994, and has served as the Vice President and Senior Vice President for Planned Giving and Endowment since 1999. With a background in law and charitable gift planning, Michael oversees the Legacy and Endowment Department work in charitable gift planning and development of endowments, capital gifts, charitable remainder trusts, gift annuities, philanthropic funds and supporting foundations. He works with donors and their advisors to develop tax-wise gift plans that reflect the donor’s financial, estate and charitable planning goals, and, where appropriate, foster intergenerational succession.

Michael J. Dye, Esq.

Vice President, Investments and Risk Management

Michael is primarily responsible for oversight and management of the Jewish Community Investment Fund, a comingled pool of endowment assets belonging to The Associated, its agencies and other Jewish organizations. He also provides guidance and counsel on risk management, corporate governance, regulatory and tax issues for The Associated and its agencies.

Ben Gershowitz

Vice President, Facilities

Ben currently serves as the Vice President of Facilities for The Associated. Ben has been with The Associated for eight years. In his role, Ben is the property manager for The Associated’s Real Estate portfolio and acts as the owner’s representative for all construction projects. In addition, he works closely with executive management and community leadership to coordinate the planning and development for The Associated’s real estate holdings.

Melinda Greenberg Michel

Vice President, Women's Philanthropy

After nine years in The Associated’s marketing department, Melinda joined the development team as Vice President, Women’s Philanthropy in August 2015. In this role, Melinda oversees the fundraising and community-building efforts of Associated Women, which boasts a 70-year history of supporting the needs of our community and those of Jews in Israel and around the world. Prior to coming to The Associated, Melinda served as Director of Marketing and Communications at Baltimore Hebrew University, then an agency of The Associated.

Ruth Miller

Vice President, Community Planning & Allocations

Ruth directs the Associated’s $47 million annual allocations process, manages the ongoing relationship between The Associated and its beneficiary agencies and oversees the Associated’s planning agenda to strengthen the Baltimore community and the Jewish communities in Israel, Odessa and around the world.

Allison Rinker, MPS, PHR

Vice President, Human Resources

Alison is the Vice President of Human Resources. Allison assumes full responsibility for the System's employee benefits, employee wellness, talent acquisition and retention, as well as employee relations matters. Allison has been with The Associated for over 16 years in providing quality human resources services to the system, including working with consultants and vendors to provide competitive benefit and retirement plan programs, HRIS database management, regulatory compliance, employee relations, in addition to working as a strategic human resource business partner with agency executive directors and our agency staff. Allison received her Master’s Degree in Human Resources Management and Employee Relations from Penn State University. She is also a Certified Human Resources Practitioner.

Larisa Spirt

Vice President, Marketing

Larisa joined The Associated in 2015 after a decade of managing a strategic marketing research and marketing consulting firm. Larisa is responsible for overseeing The Associated brand image, developing a strategic branding direction for the organization and implementing first class branding and marketing initiatives. The marketing department works with all internal departments of The Associated and collaborates with a majority of the agencies and programs in The Associated system on their branding and marketing efforts.

Connie Stern

Vice President, Finance

Connie is the Vice President of Finance at The Associated. Her responsibilities include overseeing the Finance Department which provides accounting, budget, bill pay, financial management, payroll, and tax and compliance services to The Associated, its operating programs and a number of its agencies. Centralizing all of these services creates economic efficiencies which helps The Associated in its pursuit of total system operating efficiency.

Carole Taylor

Vice President, Technology

Carole currently serves at the Vice President of Technology for The Associated after more than 10 years with the organization. Carole oversees all Technology for The Associated and its agencies including the Donor Customer Service Center. In this role, she develops and executes strategic plans to ensure technology continues to meet the changing needs of our organization.

Darlene Wolff

Vice President, Risk Management

Darlene is the Vice President for Risk Management and has been with the organization for over 27 years. In this role, she is responsible for the administration of a wide array of employee benefits, recruitment, employee relations and risk management. Darlene partners with the Human Resource Committee to maintain a competitive work place.
