Israel Experience

Upon completing Year 1 of the JHLEP, the students participate in an all expenses-paid, four-week trip to Israel. While there, they are introduced to the diversity of modern Israeli life, residing at Yemin Orde Youth Village in Haifa and being paired with displaced teens who hail from over 24 countries including Israel, South America, Europe, Ethiopia and the former Soviet Union.

The Israeli and American students tour historic sites in Israel, including Jerusalem, the Jordan River and the Dead Sea. They also attend workshops on diversity, Israeli culture, group dynamics and leadership.  The Israel experience allows ECYP students the opportunity to gain independence, develop a respect and appreciation for other cultures, and reflect on their self-worth and character.  Salena Long, Class of 2009, reflects by stating, “Never in a million years would I have ever dreamed of visiting a foreign country.  My home here is foreign enough.  Traveling to Israel shed light on not just a place where my feet hit Holy ground; but a place that resides in me; a place that let me know I am better than my circumstance and I have so much to live for.  I walked away from my Israel experience compelled to make a difference, in my life and others.”

Program participants discover that while there are cultural differences among them, they have much in common.  They learn to appreciate and respect diversity and teambuilding.  The students assume new responsibilities, affirm leadership potential and learn the importance of cooperation and involvement.  These experiences contribute to the core values of our future young leaders and the Greater Baltimore community.
