Meet Paula and Harold

Paula and Harold Katz, who live in the Glen Avenue neighborhood of Northwest Baltimore, were coming off a whirlwind year and a half.

They had just finished paying for three weddings in a little over two years when the heating system in their home went up. Tapped out financially – the couple has a child in college and one in Jewish day school – they were worried about how to pay for it. At the same time, winter was just around the corner.

Fortunately, Paula saw an ad in a local newspaper about a new interest-free energy savings loan being offered by CHAI: Comprehensive Housing Assistance, Inc. She immediately contacted CHAI and went to an energy fair the agency offered that fall to learn more. Working with CHAI, the couple applied for a $10,000 loan, were interviewed and accepted.

Later that fall, the couple hired a contractor who installed a more efficient heating system in their home. Not only did the loan help them pay for it, but it also enabled them to upgrade to a more energy-efficient option that would save them money in the long run.

What particularly impressed the Katzs was CHAI’s due diligence during the project. “I never would have realized it, but when following-up, CHAI noticed that the thermostat the contractor put into our home was the wrong one. They made sure the contractor came back and fixed it,” says Paula.

The couple was not newcomers to CHAI. In the early 2000s, they were looking to move to a bigger home that would meet the needs of their expanded family. “We also wanted to be in walking distance of our synagogue,” says Harold.
Through CHAI, the family received a loan from the city and a 10-year interest free loan from CHAI, which they paid back in eight years.

“Everything we’ve ever done with CHAI has been professional and thorough. They are well-run and efficient and what they say they are going to do, they do,” says Harold.
